The past, thus, becomes a part of the present consciousness of the diasporic subject. Although the past is invoked now and then, the focus is persistently on the ‘moment.’ The past is invoked to indicate a certain contrast, which must be incorporated, and controlled in the present life in order to negotiate the network of social relations in the immediate world. The word ‘diaspora’ itself, coming, as it does, from Greek ‘dia’ (‘through’) and ‘speirein’ (‘to scatter’), etymologically means ‘dispersal,’ and involves, at least two countries, two cultures, which are embedded in the mind of the migrant, side-by-side. The perspective of the ‘moment’ privileged in the above extract may indeed be very useful in the study of diasporic literature. I believe, when our experience of the world is less that of a long life developing through time than that of a network that connects points and intersects with its own skein. We are in the epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of the near and the far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed. The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space.

Which reminds me of how far we still have to go in how we treat little girls and boys. But I can't honestly envision the little guy's dad reading him this concoction of pink hearts and hair ribbons. It's not like little boys will be hurt by seeing some pink every now and then. Of course girls have had to read guys' books since the dawn of time, so I personally wouldn't mind this at all. I have been reading this to my son for years now. Above all, it is a story about feeling safe, secure, and loved unconditionally. Since I'm currently looking for bedtime stories for a friend's little boy, I'm a little disappointed that this sweet book is so obviously geared towards girls. The simple yet powerful story of Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare and their playful attempts to measure their affection will appeal to children and adults. Good for babies' and toddlers' bedtime routines. This book reminds me of that: baby gets ten kisses on her toes and then we count down to that last, single kiss "on your sleepy, dreamy head." A lovely progression that starts with tickly, silly fun (because how could ten toe kisses not be tickly, silly fun?!), and ends with peaceful sleepy relaxation. You can start with your forehead and work your way down to your toes, or vice versa. There's a type of meditation practice that teaches you to methodically relax your entire body (and mind) by tightening, and then relaxing, one muscle group at a time. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her.
